Clean energy and jobs for Inner Mongolia

The project is located near the town Touzhijian in Taibus Banner which is part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northeastern China. 33 sets of wind turbine-generators with a per unit capacity of 1.5 MW were installed to generate electricity. The total installed capacity is 49.5 MW and approximately 121,700 GWh are being fed into the North China Power Grid (NCPG) annually. Electricity in the NCPG is mostly generated by plants running on fossil fuels, mostly coal. The project reduces CO2-emissions by substituting this type of electricity generation with wind energy. It stimulates the growth of renewable energy in a rural region which is mainly dependent on agriculture and stock farming.

The population's feedback with regards to the project is thoroughly positive. Prevention of air pollution and the preservation of the region's water quality are highlighted in particular. All installed wind turbines and generators were manufactured by domestic companies. Furthermore, the project creates 27 long-term jobs with salaries and welfare above the local average.

How wind energy contributes to climate action

As the name suggests, wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate energy. During this process, a generator located inside the wind turbine converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. As energy is still mainly generated from fossil fuels in many areas around the world, clean wind energy can replace some of this fossil, high-emission energy and verifiably save CO2 emissions.

In most cases, the sustainably generated electricity from the wind power projects is fed into a regional power grid, which diversifies the power supply and improves energy security in regions that are frequently affected by power shortages and outages. A project often creates increased job opportunities for the local population and the area can be used for additional activities, such as agriculture. Wind power projects make an important contribution to a clean energy supply worldwide and contribute to sustainable development with respect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
