A certified climate project combined with additional commitment

This combined project contributes to the financing of a certified climate project and additionally supports compost build-up in Germany. For every tonne of CO2 saved through the contribution via a certified climate project, another tonne of CO2 is reduced through a compost build-up project. Compost soils store much more carbon than above-ground plants and have better fertility and structure.

Currently , compost build-up in Germany is either combined with a certified solar energy project in India (climatepartner.com/1429) or with a certified forest protection project in Indonesia (climatepartner.com/1064). Combined climate project to date: forest protection, Mataven, Colombia (climatepartner.com/1402) and forest protection, Eastern province, Zambia (climatepartner.com/1141).

Our additional commitment: CO2 sequestration through compost build-up

With our combined project, we combine verified emission reductions through a certified climate project with additional commitment. Revitalised, fertile soils are the basis for healthy food and clean groundwater. They form the foundation of life for us humans and for many species of flora and fauna. Our goal is to make our soils more fertile again naturally by building up compost. More and more farms are continuously taking part in our programme.

With the build-up of compost, CO2 is removed from the atmosphere and absorbed by the soil. Our soils are therefore one of the most powerful natural CO2 stores. The compost content is regularly measured and documented. The participating farmers receive extensive support and guarantee long-term CO2 storage. The project contributes to agricultural development and to increasing biodiversity within agriculture. The certified climate project is registered with international standards.

Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Clean Water and SanitationSoil rich in compost breaks down pollutants and leaves behind clean drinking water. Compost soil absorbs water better and can hold it better.
Decent Work and Economic GrowthNaturally fertile soils make land management less dependent on external resources. As fewer resources have to be used, the profitability of farms increases.
Responsible Consumption and ProductionLand cultivation that builds up compost promotes the protection of the soil as an important basis for life. This means that soils do not erode and are preserved for future generations.
Climate ActionSoils enriched with humus can store much more CO2 than other soils and even more than terrestrial plants. Therefore, humus build-up is an important lever for CO2 reduction.
Life on LandThe build-up of compost promotes biodiversity and thus protects life on land. Ecosystems are strengthened and restored.
