Increasing the share of clean energy in eastern China

The objective of this carbon offset project is to generate renewable electricity using wind power resources and to sell the generated output to the Hebei Southern Power Grid. The installed capacity of the project activity is 49.5 MW, comprising 33 sets of wind turbines with a unit capacity of 1,500 kW each. The average annual power delivered to the grid by the project is 114.999 GWh.

The project contributes to avoiding CO2 emissions from electricity generation by fossil fuel power plants that supply the Hebei Southern Power Grid, which is an integral part of the North China Power Grid (NCPG). The project fits into the development priority of China, and supports China in stimulating and accelerating the commercialization of grid-connected renewable energy technologies and the green power market developments. The wind farm is located on the seashore of Haixing County near Cangzhou City in the Hebei Province in North China.

How wind energy contributes to climate action

As the name suggests, wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate energy. During this process, a generator located inside the wind turbine converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. As energy is still mainly generated from fossil fuels in many areas around the world, clean wind energy can replace some of this fossil, high-emission energy and verifiably save CO2 emissions.

In most cases, the sustainably generated electricity from the wind power projects is fed into a regional power grid, which diversifies the power supply and improves energy security in regions that are frequently affected by power shortages and outages. A project often creates increased job opportunities for the local population and the area can be used for additional activities, such as agriculture. Wind power projects make an important contribution to a clean energy supply worldwide and contribute to sustainable development with respect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Wind energy projects in the ClimatePartner portfolio are registered with international standards.

Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Affordable and Clean EnergyThe project contributes to improving electricity supply from a clean and independent source and increases the share of renewable energies in the grid.
Decent Work and Economic GrowthDuring assembly and installation of wind turbines, and for operation of the wind farm, about 30 jobs will be created.
Climate ActionThe project saves about 126,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
