Extending wind energy in Indonesia

The share of renewable energies in Indonesia is still very low compared to the existing potential. Less than a third of the electricity is generated from renewable sources, a very small fraction comes from wind power. In addition, the country is dependent on electricity imports due to the increasing consumption.

The carbon finance from our project facilitated the construction and operation of a wind farm near the villages of Mattirotasi and Lainungan in the Watang Pulu Subdistrict, Sidrap Regency in the province of South Sulawesi. The plant comprises 30 turbines and has a total capacity of 75 MW. It generates an average of 253 GWh per year, which is fed into Indonesia's national grid. The project thus contributes to increasing the share of renewable energies in the Indonesian energy mix and at the same time reduces dependence on electricity imports. It also has several positive impacts on sustainable development in the region.

How wind energy contributes to climate action

As the name suggests, wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate energy. During this process, a generator located inside the wind turbine converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. As energy is still mainly generated from fossil fuels in many areas around the world, clean wind energy can replace some of this fossil, high-emission energy and verifiably save CO2 emissions.

In most cases, the sustainably generated electricity from the wind power projects is fed into a regional power grid, which diversifies the power supply and improves energy security in regions that are frequently affected by power shortages and outages. A project often creates increased job opportunities for the local population and the area can be used for additional activities, such as agriculture. Wind power projects make an important contribution to a clean energy supply worldwide and contribute to sustainable development with respect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Wind energy projects in the ClimatePartner portfolio are registered with international standards.

Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Affordable and Clean EnergyThe project generates 253 GWh of renewable energy per year for the national grid. Also the power grid was expanded for villages that previously had no access to electricity. In addition, 21 households were equipped with solar systems.
Decent Work and Economic GrowthThe project contributes to the local economic development through creating approx.. 250-700 new jobs.
Climate ActionThe project saves about 141,240 tonnes of CO22 emissions per year.
