More clean electricity and sustainable development for northern China

The project activity is located near the city of Yumen in the province of Gansu in northern China. The Project generates renewable electricity from wind as a natural, emission-free source, and supplies to the Northwest China Power Grid (NWPG), which is dominated by fossil fuel-based thermal power plants to meet the majority of regional electricity demand.

The project activity involves the construction and operation of a 201 MW wind farm, comprising 134 new wind turbines of 1,500 kW each. The wind farm delivers an average of 463,714 MWh of clean electricity to the NWPG, which will partially displace electricity generated from grid connected conventional fossil fuel based plants, and thus help reduce the high high levels of CO2 emissions from energy generation. The project also causes various benefits to society and the environment, contributing to national as well as local sustainable development.

How wind energy contributes to climate action

As the name suggests, wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate energy. During this process, a generator located inside the wind turbine converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. As energy is still mainly generated from fossil fuels in many areas around the world, clean wind energy can replace some of this fossil, high-emission energy and verifiably save CO2 emissions.

In most cases, the sustainably generated electricity from the wind power projects is fed into a regional power grid, which diversifies the power supply and improves energy security in regions that are frequently affected by power shortages and outages. A project often creates increased job opportunities for the local population and the area can be used for additional activities, such as agriculture. Wind power projects make an important contribution to a clean energy supply worldwide and contribute to sustainable development with respect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Wind energy projects in the ClimatePartner portfolio are registered with international standards.

Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Affordable and Clean EnergyThe project helps reduce electricity shortages by contributing to a more stable energy supply and thus to a steady and reliable economical growth in the region.
Decent Work and Economic GrowthThe project has generated job opportunities for local contractors and suppliers, as well as long-term employment for operation and maintenance of the plant.
Climate ActionThe project saves about 361,380 tonnes of CO2 per year.
